Everything Gon’ Be Alright This morning
“Everything Gon’ Be Alright This Morning” is an homage to the Vancouver Asahi baseball team, their history and lasting impact on the Japanese Canadian community. Standing at 96 inches tall the eight works in the exhibition are larger than life when confronted by the viewer. The figures are heroic, stoic, ominous, defiant, brave, celebratory and angry. Like the history of the Asahi and Japanese Canadians, the work is complicated and multifaceted. There exists a simultaneous celebration of the triumphs of the team and an acknowledgement of the dark and traumatic experience of internment faced by the community, which even the Asahi could not outrun.
